Route of the Week - 42

September 23, 2019

This week we’re exploring the Route 42! The Route 42 is SEPTA Bus Route that runs between Penn’s Landing and Wycombe. This route also makes limited stops at 61st & Pine, one of SEPTA’s newly rebuilt bus loops.

This Route was once a streetcar line that ran from 61st and Pine Streets to Front and Chestnut Streets via Spruce, Chestnut and Walnut. This streetcar ran until buses replaced streetcars on September 8, 1956. In 1965, service extended to 2nd & Dock Streets in Society Hill. Service was re-routed several times, however, the current route has remained the same since June 1996.

On a typical weekday, the Route 42 carries 10,392 passengers and travels 1,638 miles. The 42 is also one of SEPTA’s Night Owl routes, running 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This route takes 234 weekday trips, 168 Saturday trips and 140 trips on Sunday.

The 42 connects with a number of popular destinations in Philadelphia including Independence Hall, Penn’s Landing, Jefferson University HospitalDrexel University and the University of Pennsylvania. The Route 42 also connects with SEPTA's University City Station30th Street Station, Jefferson Station, and 69th Street Transportation Center
