June 24, 2019

This week's Route of the Week is the Route 40! The Route 40 starts in Society Hill/Queen Village at 2nd & Lombard, traveling west to Graduate Hospital, before crossing the Schuylkill River and traveling through University City. The route continues towards Fairmount Park, before looping towards Wynnefield, ending its route at Conshohocken & Monument in Bala Cynwyd.

While the Route 40 isn't a Nite Owl route, it does operate from 5:00am to 2:30am seven days a week. On a typical weekday, this route carries 6,713 passengers and makes 145 trips. Annually, the Route 40 travels 496,770 miles.

The Route 40 was a trolley line until buses replaced streetcars on September 8, 1956. Streetcar service operated from the Parkside Loop in Weest Philly to 2nd & Lombard in Queen Village.
