Fairmount/Art Museum Area

Resting just beyond Benjamin Franklin Parkway, home to Philly’s truly world-class museums, Fairmount is synonymous with fine art — but it’s far from the only draw of Center City’s effusive northern neighbor. Referred to as the “Art Museum Area” due to its walking-distance access to the Philadelphia Museum of Art, Franklin Institute, Rodin and Barnes Foundation, Fairmount possesses a distinct personality that thrives independent of those hallowed halls. The name "Fairmount" derives from the prominent hill on which the Philadelphia Museum of Art now sits and where William Penn intended to build his manor house.

How to get there

The Greater Art Museum Area is serviced by a number of bus lines, a trolley line, and the Broad Street Line. The Route 15 Trolley runs along Girard Avenue stopping at most corners between Broad Street and Fairmount Park. The Broad Street Line runs along Broad Street with stops at Spring Garden Street, Fairmount Avenue and Girard Avenue. For Bus service between Fairmount Park and 21st Street, hop Routes 7, 32 or 48. For service between 21st Street and Broad Street. hop Routes 2 or 33. Route 38 stops at the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

Fare

One way fare is $2.50 cash. You must have exact change if paying the cashier. The cashier cannot make change.

Your best bet, is a SEPTA Key Card. The Key is reloadable and reusable and available from Kiosks in SEPTA Transit Stations. The SEPTA Key Travel Wallet allows you to pay as you go and you'll receive a discount for each ride ($2.00 versus the $2.50 cash fare). You must load a minimum of $10 [which will get you 5 rides]. Funds in your Travel Wallet can only be used to pay for one (1) person. It cannot be tapped multiple times to pay for anyone traveling with you.

Best part – your SEPTA Key gets you more than just a ride. Flash it for discounts on food, drink, museums, sports, shops and more. Click here for a full list of Partners.

Other Amenities

Ride IndeGo Bikeshare to the Greater Art Museum Area. With nine stations (and more on the way) between Spring Garden and Girard Avenue, you’ll never be far from a dock. Bike lanes available on Spring Garden Street, Fairmount Avenue, Pennsylvania Avenue, and 22nd Street.
