Route of the Week - 47

June 4, 2018

This week's Route of the Week is the Route 47, which takes riders from Whitman Plaza to 5th & Godfrey. The Route 47 is one of our Night Owl buses, meaning it runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Want to know if a route is a Night Owl like the 47? Just check the schedule to see if there is an owl image on the cover.

Route 47 Schedule

On a typical weekday, the Route 47 travels 2,590 miles and carries 16,299 passengers. That makes the Route 47 SEPTA's fifth busiest bus route. The Route 47 travels 10 miles on a mostly straight route from South Philadelphia (Whitman Plaza) to North Philadelphia (5th & Godfrey). In Center City, Route 47 riders can connect to the Market-Frankford Line at 8th Street Station, Regional Rail at Jefferson Station and a number of different bus routes

Travelling down 8th Street and up 7th Street, the Route 47 is a great way to get to or from South Philadelphia's Italian Market. The Italian Market runs along 9th Street from Wharton to Fitzwater Streets, featuring delicacies ranging from ground coffee beans to fresh pasta. Vendors line the street serving not only delectable Italian fare, but also Mexican, Vietnamese, Korean, and more.

The Route 47 runs from north to south through countless neighborhoods, connecting diverse communities along the way. So, in November of 2016, Mural Arts created a project called 47 Stories. Through its powerful imagery and quotations, 47 Stories demonstrates that “we are all migrating together.” Read more about 47 Stories here.
