October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October 21, 2022

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month. And thanks to two SEPTA Trolley Operators - SEPTA is doing its part to raise awareness.

This specially decorated SEPTA trolley is thanks to Devante Parker and Soup Davis. The pair spent 16 hours decorating the vehicle - inside and out - to promote Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The labor of love was inspired by Parker’s aunt who thankfully survived the disease.

“When she was diagnosed with breast cancer it brought more awareness to me because through her whole time with it, she showed courage and strength,” says Parker, a newly- hired light rail operator. “I want to bring more awareness to breast cancer and to show everyone who’s fighting it to know we support them, and their fight is our fight.”

Parker also says his goal is to bring more attention to breast cancer and to also make everyone who’s fighting it, lost a loved one to it, and any survivors to feel good and to make them smile.

Passengers and neighbors can see the Trolley on Routes 11, 13, 34 & 36 through the end of October.

This month reminds us all of the importance of getting regular screenings. Breast cancer most commonly impacts women, but it can impact men as well. Breast cancer is a disease that will affect one out of every eight women and one in a thousand men. The importance of early detection and preventive care in the fight against breast cancer cannot be overstated.

While breast cancer cannot totally be prevented, there are things such as diet, exercise, and other healthy lifestyle choices that can help decrease your risk for developing breast cancer.
