Route of the Week - Santa Express

December 23, 2019

This week, our Route of the Week blog will be a little different. We’re not going to be exploring a traditional route. Instead, we’re going to take a closer look at the SEPTA Santa Express! On 11/29, Santa Claus himself came from the North Pole to Frankford Transportation Center, and then hopped the Market-Frankford Line to City Hall to skate around the Rothman Orthopaedics Ice Rink. Families from all over Southeastern PA came to officially kick off the holiday season.

This was the 29th year Santa has ridden SEPTA’s Santa Express. Dozens of SEPTA Ambassadors dedicated their morning to making it a special day. They gave away thousands of pins and faux Santa beards. The Market-Frankford Line wasn’t the only line that was decked out with holiday spirit! The Media/Elwyn Line, Lansdale/Doylestown Line, Manayunk/Norristown Line, and the Broad Street Line were decorated for the occasion. All throughout the day there were performances from the Walnut Street Theatre, carolers leading everyone in song, and plenty of games and prizes.

As the festivities wound down, hundreds of people stayed to explore the Wintergarden at Dilworth Park. This holiday-inspired garden is located on the Albert M. Greenfield Lawn. Children and adults delighted in discovering picture-perfect moments amid holiday topiaries, twinkling lights, and seasonal plants. The beautiful garden is a great spot for holiday card photos!

Stay tuned for next year, as we’ll be celebrating the 30th annual SEPTA SANTA Express.
