National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day

January 9, 2020

Thursday, January 9, 2020, is National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Since 1981, the Transit Police Department has been dedicated to keeping customers safe and secure, while protecting SEPTA property and staff. You can read more about the history of the department here.

Nearly 260 sworn officers serve and protect within the 2,200 square-mile SEPTA service area. There are six patrol zones, allowing officers to easily respond to emergencies while empowering them to quickly make decisions and address local issues.

SEPTA Transit Police have three main goals:

  • To work in partnership with other SEPTA employees and customers

  • To provide a safe and secure work and travel environment

  • To enhance the quality of life on our system through law enforcement efforts that reduce the fear and incidence of crime

And you can help SEPTA Transit Police reach those goals! The SEPTA Transit Watch app allows SEPTA riders to discreetly share safety & security tips with SEPTA Transit Police.

Transit Police Officers are responsible for policing the entire regional SEPTA system. Covering an area of five Pennsylvania counties (Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia) and three states (Delaware, New Jersey and Pennsylvania) can be a challenge, but the department upholds this effort through its core mission and commitment to service, integrity and true professionalism.

So if you see a member of the Transit Police on your commute today, make sure you thank them for their hard work!
