Independence Mall

Also known as "America’s Most Historic Square Mile," Independence Mall is the three-block section of Independence National Historical Park that lies directly north of Independence Hall and south of the National Constitution Center. It is bounded by Chestnut, Race, 5th and 6th Streets. 

Independence Mall is home to free speech, special events, and public programming. 

How to get there

Short walk from Jefferson Station or ride the Market-Frankford Line to 5th Street/Independence Hall Station. Bus Routes 5, 9, 17, 21, 33, 38, 42, 44, 47, 48, 57, and 61 also get you there or close.

Liberation Rising: Juneteenth Block Party and Free Museum Day

African American Museum in Philadelphia

Culture, history, liberation and celebration take center stage at the 2023 Juneteenth Block Party on 6/19 at 11AM with the African American Museum in Philadelphia (AAMP). In partnership with Wawa and Welcome America Inc., AAMP will host an all-day, family-friendly outdoor festival with W.U.R.D.’s Tiffany Bacon as emcee, with entertainment, activations, games, and education for everyone to enjoy. This year, AAMP welcomes the legendary DJ, Spinderella, for an unforgettable tribute commemorating the 50th anniversary of Hip Hop! Celebrants can expect a community marketplace featuring Black-owned businesses, community resources, giveaways, artmaking, food trucks, and line dancing, with more acts and special guests to be announced.

Free Museum Days: African American Museum in Philadelphia

African American Museum in Philadelphia

Visit the African American Museum in Philadelphia for free on 6/16, any time between 8AM and 4PM! The museum is committed to telling the story of African Americans in all its permutations: family life, the Civil Rights movement, arts and entertainment, sports, medicine, architecture, politics, religion, law and technology. The AAMP currently houses four galleries and an auditorium, each of which offer exhibitions anchored by one of our three dominant themes: the African Diaspora, the Philadelphia Story, and the Contemporary Narrative. Online registration is encouraged.

This weeklong celebration of the stars and stripes - from 6/11 thru 6/17 - features daily 10 a.m. flag-raising ceremonies, flag-making workshops, meet-and-greets with costumed Once Upon a Nation History Makers and an afternoon curator’s corner that highlights rarely seen items from the museum’s collection. The well-known and loved story of Betsy Ross sewing the first Stars & Stripes is tightly woven into the colorful fabric of America’s rich history. The Betsy Ross House, the birthplace of the American flag, is alive with the sights and sounds of the 18th century. Tour the house on 6/27 for free admission and then stay a while longer to meet Betsy in her upholstery shop and learn more about her exciting life and times through our interactive, historical programming.

Free Museum Days: Christ Church Preservation Trust

Christ Church

Visit Christ Church, the birthplace of the American Episcopal Church, on 6/26 between 11AM and 5PM for free admission! The Church was founded in 1695 as a condition of William Penn’s Charter. Known as “The Nation’s Church,” it hosted members of the Continental Congress during the American Revolution and Presidents George Washington and John Adams in the first decade of the newly established Republic. Among early members were Benjamin and Deborah Franklin, Betsy Ross, John Penn (William Penn’s grandson), and signers of the Constitution and of the Declaration of Independence, including Robert Morris, Benjamin Rush, and Francis Hopkinson. This Church further serves as a site of significance in Philadelphia’s history of slavery and abolition.

PECO Go 4th and Learn: A Cultural Journey

Budding engineers and artists learn about lantern-making and block printing with the Asian Arts Initiative and future gurus sharpen their concentration in a tai chi class.
