Getting to Green: Route 4

SEPTA partnered with Mural Arts and Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC) on Getting to Green: Routes to Roots - a multidisciplinary public art project aimed at inspiring Philadelphia residents to use public transportation [aka SEPTA] to explore the city’s green spaces. Through unique artwork including hand-drawn maps - riders are encouraged to discover new pathways and routes.
You might be surprised by how quickly you can travel from urban areas to green spaces on SEPTA.
Approximately 10 miles long – Route 4 [formerly Route C] has been operational since February 9, 2012. It provides service between Fern Rock Transportation Center in North Philadelphia and NRG Station in South Philadelphia. Route 4 makes 101 trips on weekdays and carries 2,955 passengers on weekdays. On the weekends it makes an average of 81 trips per day.
Route 4 is a great alternative to the Broad Street Line for travel to the South Philly Sports Complex and FDR Park. It conveniently drops passengers off at Broad & Pattison - a quick walk to the Wells Fargo Center, Lincoln Financial Field, Citizen's Bank Park, and FDR Park across the street.
Franklin Delano Roosevelt (FDR) Park (originally named League Island Park) is South Philadelphia’s largest park and one of its most important public institutions - reflecting the remarkable racial, cultural, and economic diversity of South Philadelphia. Its lakes, architecture, athletic fields, and nature trails create a civic commons where Philadelphians of all backgrounds can recreate, experience nature, and enjoy the cultural expressions of South Philadelphia.
The park spans approximately 348 acres and includes roadways, walking paths, landscaped architecture, picnic areas, and recreational spaces. It also features natural lands such as ponds and lagoons.
Explore a green oasis in the heart of Philadelphia that offers a wide range of recreational activities. Enjoy FREE family fishing every Wednesday at 4PM or experience the vibrant Southeast Asian Market on weekends throughout the spring and summer.
And don't forget - you can bring your bike on the bus to explore and enjoy even more!

Getting to Green: Routes to Roots is a collaboration between two local Philadelphia artists. Shira Walinsky has created over 40 murals in Philadelphia focusing on people and maps. Laura Deutch uses media and participatory art to explore connections between people, places, and their stories.
